Out and About:

"Le Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan" is a protected region of outstanding natural beauty and offers everything for lovers of the outdoors, with many beautiful lakes and rivers such as the famous "Lac de Settons". The area is wonderful throughout all seasons, with spring and autumn being particularly colourful.

The Morvans' main information centre is at Saint Brisson. The information centre is also the home of the Resistance Museum and History Museum of the Morvan.

There are numerous walks and hiking trails (GR13) together with cycling routes throughout the park, many starting right on your doorstep. You could also try a cruise on the many rivers and canals surrounding the region or fish in one of the many local lakes (permits required) .For the more adventurous quad bikes are available for hire at Dun les Places, in addition to numerous locations throughout the park for a variety of watersports, rock climbing and other activities.

Attractions I would recommend:

Vezelay and the Basilica St. Magdalene. This historical hilltop town were added to the Unesco list of World Heritage Sites in 1979. The bones of Mary Magdalene were brought to Vezelay and placed in the Basilica and this is the starting point for the pilgrims walk to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

L'Abbaye de Fontenay - a beautiful Abbey dating back over 800 years.

Mont Beuvray and the archaeological site of Bibracte which was the capital of the Gauls until occupied by the Romans. It is a wondiful site with a super museum.

Beaune and the Hospices de Beaune (also the wine capital of Burgundy).

Dijon.. A city with a wealth of historical buildings. Do not forget to try the famous Dijon Mustard.

Autun. This city boasts several elements of Roman architecture such as walls, gates, a Roman theatre and Cathedrals. Good shopping and a weekly market on Friday.

Nevers. The tomb of St. Bernadette and of course the Formula 1 racing track at Magny Cours.

There are many more beautiful villages in the region - Flavigny sur Ozerain (the village used for the setting in the film 'Chocolat'.

Noyers sur Serin with half timber houses, tiny lanes and small squares made of Chalky and granite pavements is officially one of the most beautiful villages of France.

Semur en Auxois is one of the most picturesque towns in Burgundy. Its medieval centre remains mostly intact with the River Armancon encircling half the Town.

Avallon. This fortified town lies between two ravines, from the Ramparts you can look across the rooftops to the picturesque Valley of the River Cousin.

Plus many more beautiful and famous Chateaux set in parkland for you to visit.

Many of the sites in the towns are open to visitors year round.

The Wine.

The wines of Burgundy are a never-ending story. They offer complexity and charm that no other wines in the world compete with. Take a drive on the Grand Cru route and see and taste for yourself.

Food and Drink:

Here in Burgundy you are spoilt for choice. In the 2008 edition the Mitchelin Guide awarded stars to twenty-eight restaurants in Burgundy.

In our local Town of Saulieu we have the world famous Le Relais Bernard Loiseau Restaurant, plus La Vieille Auberge which serves very good food at affordable prices. These are only two of several high quality restaurants in town.

In the surrounding area popular restaurants also include:

Auberge de L'Atre at Quarre les Tombes
Le Chalet Bleu, Autun.
Le Medieval at Mont St. Jean
